Malabang Bus Terminal: A Cultural Landmark in Motion

Project Title: Malabang Bus Terminal
Principal Architect: Gloryrose Dy Metilla
Junior Designer: Jenelle Metilla
Project Type: Government
Client: MILG BARMM
Stage: Ongoing
Project Location: Malabang, Lanao Del Sur

The Malabang Bus Terminal is set to become more than just a transportation hub—it is an architectural masterpiece that embodies the rich cultural heritage of the Moro and indigenous communities of the southern Philippines. Inspired by the kulintang, a traditional musical instrument renowned for its rhythmic and harmonious arrangement of gongs, the terminal seamlessly integrates functional infrastructure with an artistic tribute to the region’s history and identity.

Architectural Inspiration: The Kulintang’s Harmony in Structure

The architectural concept of the Malabang Bus Terminal takes direct inspiration from the kulintang, which is widely recognized in Mindanaoan culture as a symbol of rhythm, connection, and harmony. The structure mirrors the instrument’s layered design, incorporating fluid, wave-like roofing and intricate patterns reminiscent of the metal gongs used in the kulintang ensemble.

The terminal’s aesthetic design reflects the careful craftsmanship and attention to detail that define traditional musical artistry. From curved, perforated panels that allow natural light to filter in, mimicking the reverberation of sound waves, to geometric motifs inspired by Maranao and Maguindanao patterns, the entire structure celebrates the region’s deep-rooted cultural identity.

Functionality and Modern Infrastructure

While the terminal is deeply rooted in tradition, it is also a modern, functional space designed to accommodate the growing transportation needs of Malabang and its surrounding municipalities. The terminal will feature:

  • Spacious Passenger Lounges – Comfortable seating areas designed with natural ventilation and eco-friendly materials.
  • Efficient Bus Bays and Traffic Flow – A well-planned layout ensuring smooth passenger movement and reducing congestion.
  • Retail and Commercial Spaces – A dedicated area for local vendors and businesses to thrive.
  • Sustainability Features – Solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient lighting.
  • Accessibility and Safety – Inclusive design elements for persons with disabilities, emergency response areas, and secure waiting zones.

A Cultural Gateway for Malabang

The Malabang Bus Terminal is more than just an infrastructure project; it is envisioned as a cultural gateway that will introduce travelers to the artistic and historical wealth of Lanao del Sur. The waiting areas and walls will showcase indigenous artworks, traditional textiles, and historical narratives that highlight the town’s role in Mindanao’s trade and cultural evolution.

Furthermore, the terminal will serve as a platform for local artisans and musicians, providing space for performances and exhibitions that celebrate the Maranao and Maguindanao cultural heritage. This fusion of functionality and artistry transforms the terminal into a living cultural hub rather than just a transit facility.

Government Initiative and Community Impact

This government-initiated project, spearheaded by MILG BARMM (Ministry of the Interior and Local Government – Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao), aims to promote economic growth and infrastructural development in Lanao del Sur. The Malabang Bus Terminal is a strategic investment that will enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and support local businesses.

The involvement of Principal Architect Gloryrose Dy Metilla and Junior Designer Jenelle Metilla ensures that the project embodies world-class design principles while remaining culturally rooted. Their work reflects a commitment to sustainable and community-oriented architecture, making the terminal a beacon of progress for Malabang.

Looking Ahead: A Landmark in the Making

As the project progresses, the Malabang Bus Terminal is set to become a symbol of cultural preservation and modernization in the Bangsamoro region. It will not only provide a seamless transport experience but also ignite a sense of pride among the local communities.

With its architectural brilliance, deep cultural ties, and commitment to sustainability, the terminal is poised to be an iconic landmark—a true testament to the resilience and vibrancy of Mindanaoan culture. Once completed, it will stand as a harmonious convergence of tradition and progress, rhythm and movement, culture and connectivity.
